The Gunflint Trail Historical Society

Mission and Goal Statement

Mission

The mission of the Gunflint Trail Historical Society shall be to preserve the history of the Gunflint Trail and its early settlers for residents, guests, travelers, and future generations.
Goals

1. The Society would establish the Gunflint Trail Historical Society as an incorporated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It would be accredited with the Minnesota Historical Society and associated with the Cook County Historical Society. The organization would have a board of trustees, officers, general membership, professional advisory board, and working committees.

2. The Society would seek to establish a partnership with the United States Forest Service to develop a museum in the Chik-Wauk Lodge building which would be listed on the National Registry of Historic Sites. The museum would provide a collection and preservation site for documents, photographs, and artifacts relating to the history of the Gunflint Trail and its people. The museum would be open approximately 5 months a year. The society would hope to open this museum in the summer of 2010.

3. The Society would develop the remaining Chik-Wauk property with interpretive nature trails, scenic viewpoints, and hiking trails that would provide visitors with a destination that reflects the unique personality of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the Gunflint Trail.

4. The Society would seek to locate, catalog and preserve other historic sites on the Gunflint Trail.

5. The operations of the society would be financed through grants, endowments, memberships, admission fees, gift store sales, and support from the United States Forest Service.
