Open House Presentation, Temporary Exhibit

Sunday July 2, 2017 11:00am-04:00pm
Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center

Open House Presentation, Temporary Exhibit "Remembering the Ham Lake Fire 2007".

Sunday, July 2 at Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center we will have an open house for this years temporary exhibit.
Refreshments and cake will be available

This summer the Gunflint Trail Historical Society & Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center is planning a special temporary exhibit to be on display in the Museum to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Ham Lake Fire.

The exhibit commemorates the 10th anniversary of the Ham Lake Fire which burned 75,851 acres in Minnesota (36,443) and Ontario, Canada (39,408), the second largest fire in Minnesota since 1918 (Pagami Fire in 2011 at 93,000 acres) .  One hundred, thirty-three (133) total structures were lost in the first few days of the Ham Lake Fire on the Minnesota side.   Sixty-one (61) were residences, 17 commercial, and 55 were outbuilding and other structures.  The estimated value of lost buildings from Cook County Assessor’s office was $3.7 million.

Using a tablet device, visitors to the museum are able to listen to WTIP Community Radio audio interviews and view Good Measure Media’s Ham Lake Fire video. An electronic photo frame shows photographs received from the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department, Cook County, local residents and others.  Journals documenting Ham Lake Fire experiences are available in printed format.

We are very happy to work with the following organizations on this project; Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway Committee, Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service, WTIP radio, and Good Measure Media. We will have additional financial assistance from the Gunflint Trail Association/Visit Cook County, and the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation. Of course we could not put any of this together without the entire community helping us.Of course we could not put any of this together without the entire community helping us. The Ham Lake Fire started on May 5, 2007 and burnt over 75,000 acres.

Sunday afternoon Presentation - Gunflint & Lake Superior: Ontario's Private American Railroad

Sunday July 23, 2017 02:00pm-03:30pm
Chik-Wauk Nature Center

Sunday afternoon presentation

Gunflint & Lake Superior: Ontario’s Private American Railroad by Dave Battistel.

This is the story of a Wisconsin logging company, headquartered in Thunder Bay, who incorporated and built a railroad in Minnesota to harvest timber, and in the process created one of the most unique logging operations in North America. The railroad had no American terminus or connection; its only access was through Canada. The logs cut in Minnesota were transported to Port Arthur to be processed into lumber and were shipped to a burgeoning construction market in Canada and the United States.

All presentations are family friendly and free to the public, they will be held inside the Chik-Wauk Nature Center.

Donations are appreciated.
