The Gunflint Trail Historical Society - June Membership Meeting

Monday June 8, 2020 01:30pm-03:30pm
Seagull Lake Community Center - 12059 Gunflint Trail

June Membership Meeting for the Gunflint Trail Historical Society will be held at
Seagull Lake Community Center - 12059 Gunflint Trail

The June membership meeting is when each active GTHS member will vote for the new Board of Trustees open positions. This year there were six candidates that were nominated for the four open positions.

Voting for the Board of Trustees will be done by paper ballot.
Each active MEMBER was mailed a paper ballot.  If you did not receive one or lost your ballot, contact Chik-Wauk Museum at 218-388-9915 or chikwauk@boreal.org.
Ballots can be mailed back to Chik-Wauk no later than June 1, dropped off at Chik-Wauk Museum prior to the June 8 meeting, or bring with you to the June meeting at the Seagull Lake Community Center on or before the 1:30 pm deadline.

After a brief overview of GTHS business the guest speaker will be Larry Wooding on the History of the Gunflint Trail Postal Service.

The Gunflint Trail Historical Society has four public membership meetings available to all GTHS members. Membership meetings are held the second Monday of June, July, August, and September at either the Seagull Lake Community Center or the A. Paul and Carol Schaap Community Center (you can find a list of meeting dates and places on the GTHS website).

Treats and conversation follow (thank you to the ladies that provide the home baked goodies each month).

Chik-Wauk Nature Center Presentation - Tim Cochrane

Sunday June 28, 2020 02:00pm-03:00pm
Chik-Wauk Nature Center

Linklaters: People of the Canoe Country

Tim Cochrane has been researching the story of the Linklater family for years. His quest to find historical documentation of elusive documents relating to the Linklaters is a story in and of itself. The resulting work is an extraordinary example of combining genealogy and history to chronicle a tale that might previously have been little known.

The Linklater history goes back to Canada and Native Americans on both sides of the border. These early residents of our area were mentors to many early conservationists, including Sigurd Olson. In addition, many noted Cook County families were related to Tchi-Ki-Wis, one of the Linklaters, such as the Powells of Saganaga, the Caribous of Grand Portage, and the Cook family for whom our county is named.

Cochrane is expected to address the trials & tribulations of doing historical research through genealogy, and some of the historical hurdles he has encountered, along with some he expected
to find, but has not – yet. His presentation will combine the travails of his research project, as well as to present a more clear picture of the Linklaters and their legacy.

All presentations are family friendly and free to the public.

The presentation will be held inside Chik-Wauk Nature Center.

Donations are appreciated.
